Is Your Skin Really Dry… or Is It Dehydrated?
Have You Been Calling Your Skin the Wrong Thing?
One of the most common things I hear from new customers is:
"I have really dry skin."
After asking just a few questions, I often discover something surprising.
Many of them don't actually have dry skin at all.
They have dehydrated skin.
Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, they describe two very different things. Understanding the difference can completely change the way you care for your skin—and explain why your current routine may not be giving you the results you're hoping for.
If your moisturizer never seems to last, your skin feels tight after washing, or your makeup suddenly isn't sitting nicely anymore, keep reading.
Your skin may simply be asking for something different.
Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin
Let's keep this simple.
Dry Skin
Dry skin is a skin type.
It naturally produces less oil (also called sebum) than other skin types.
Because there aren't enough natural oils, dry skin often feels rough, flaky, or uncomfortable.
People with dry skin usually benefit from nourishing ingredients that help replenish these missing lipids.
Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin is a skin condition.
Instead of lacking oil, it lacks water.
And here's the important part...
Anyone can have dehydrated skin.
Even someone with oily or acne-prone skin.
In fact, some of the oiliest skin I see is actually dehydrated.
When your skin loses water, it sometimes tries to compensate by producing even more oil.
This is why so many people tell me:
"I'm oily... but my skin still feels tight."
That sentence immediately makes me think about dehydration.
Why Are So Many People Dehydrated?
Our skin faces a lot more stress today than it did years ago.
Some of the most common causes include:
• Over-cleansing
• Using very hot water
• Over-exfoliating
• Too many active ingredients
• Retinol
• Air conditioning
• Canadian winters
• Sun exposure
• Stress
• Not supporting the skin barrier
Sometimes it's not that your products are "bad."
It's simply that your skin needs a chance to recover.
10 Signs Your Skin May Be Dehydrated
As an esthetician, these are some of the clues I look for.
1. Your skin feels tight after cleansing.
This is one of my biggest clues.
Your face shouldn't feel uncomfortable after washing.
Clean?
Yes.
Tight?
No.
2. Your moisturizer never seems to last.
You apply it...
Your skin feels great...
An hour later you're dry again.
3. Your makeup sits strangely.
Foundation may cling to patches or settle into fine lines.
4. Your skin looks dull.
Healthy skin reflects light.
Dehydrated skin often loses that glow.
5. Fine lines suddenly seem more noticeable.
Water helps plump the surface of the skin.
When hydration is lacking, tiny dehydration lines often appear more visible.
6. Products sting.
If products that once felt comfortable suddenly burn or sting, your skin barrier may be struggling.
7. You feel oily and tight.
This surprises many people.
Remember...
Oil and water are not the same thing.
8. Your skin seems more reactive.
You suddenly become sensitive to products you've used for years.
9. Your skin changes with the seasons.
Many people become much more dehydrated during winter or after spending time in the sun.
10. Nothing seems to work.
You keep buying richer creams...
But your skin never feels satisfied.
Why Moisturizer Alone Isn't Always Enough
One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is thinking:
"I just need a thicker moisturizer."
Sometimes you do.
But often...
Your skin first needs hydration.
Think of watering a plant.
If the soil is completely dry, you don't simply cover it.
You add water first.
Your skin works in a similar way.
The Brick Wall Analogy
I love using this example because it makes everything easier to understand.
Imagine your skin is a brick wall.
🧱 The bricks are your skin cells.
The mortar between the bricks is made up of lipids—healthy fats that help hold everything together.
When that mortar becomes damaged, water escapes much more easily.
This is why healthy skin isn't just about hydration.
It's also about protecting your skin barrier.
My Three-Step Hydration Method
This is the approach I recommend to many of my clients.
Step 1: Add Water (Humectants)
Humectants attract water into the skin.
Ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, and hyaluronic acid can all help with this step.
At Lunah, this is where our 3-in-1 Toner and Aloe Schroom fit beautifully.
Step 2: Support the Skin Barrier (Lipids)
Healthy oils help replenish the "mortar" between your skin cells.
Facial oils don't actually hydrate your skin.
Instead, they help support and soften the barrier.
This is where Liquid Gold, Triple Threat, HA serum or Moon Light Magic becomes one of my favourite steps.
Step 3: Seal Everything In (Occlusives)
The final step is helping reduce water loss.
A moisturizer or balm helps keep hydration where you want it—inside your skin.
A Simple Morning Routine
• Gentle cleanse
• Hydrating toner
• Hydrating serum
• Moisturizer
• SPF
A Simple Evening Routine
• Oil cleanse (if wearing sunscreen or makeup)
• Gentle cleanser
• Hydrating toner
• Aloe Schroom
• Oil Serum
• Moisturizer
Small Habits That Make a Big Difference
Healthy skin isn't built overnight.
It comes from consistent daily habits.
Try these simple changes:
✔ Wash with lukewarm water.
✔ Avoid over-exfoliating.
✔ Choose a gentle cleanser.
✔ Layer hydration before moisturizer.
✔ Protect your skin with sunscreen.
✔ Give your skin time to recover.
The Takeaway
Healthy skin isn't about using the most products.
It's about understanding what your skin is asking for.
If your face feels tight after cleansing...
If your moisturizer never seems to last...
If your skin feels oily but somehow still dry...
Don't assume your skin simply needs more cream.
It may be asking for hydration and barrier support instead.
Once you understand the difference between dry and dehydrated skin, your entire skincare routine begins to make a lot more sense.
And that's exactly what I hope to help you do here at Lunah—understand your skin, so you can care for it with confidence.
