Why Your Skin Suddenly Feels Dry in Fall + The Fall Skincare Routine That Can Help + after 35
Why Your Skin Suddenly Feels Dry in Fall — and How to Fix It
If your skin was perfectly happy in August and suddenly feels tight, dull, flaky or just… off as soon as fall arrives, you’re not imagining it.
That first stretch of cooler weather can change your skin surprisingly quickly. The air becomes cooler and drier, indoor heating starts creeping on, we take hotter showers, and suddenly the skincare routine that worked all summer doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore.
And if you're over 35? You may notice that seasonal shift even more.
The good news: your skin probably doesn't need an entirely new routine.
It needs a little more support.
What Actually Happens to Your Skin in Fall?
Your skin has its own protective barrier that helps keep moisture in and irritants out.
When the temperature and humidity drop, water can escape from the skin more easily. Add indoor heating, wind, hot water and sometimes too much cleansing or exfoliating, and your skin can begin to lose that comfortable, hydrated feeling.
You might notice:
- Tightness after cleansing
- Dry or flaky patches
- Dull-looking skin
- Increased sensitivity or redness
- Makeup suddenly sitting differently
- Fine lines looking more noticeable
- Skin that somehow feels dry and oily at the same time
That last one is important.
Sometimes what we interpret as "dry skin" is actually dehydrated skin — skin that's lacking water rather than oil.
And piling on the heaviest cream you can find isn't always the answer.
Step 1: Stop Over-Cleansing Your Skin
One of the easiest fall skincare mistakes is continuing to cleanse exactly the way you did during hot, humid summer weather.
If your face feels squeaky, tight or uncomfortable after cleansing, that's not the goal.
Your cleanser should remove makeup, sunscreen, dirt and excess oil without leaving your skin feeling stripped.
For fall, reach for a gentle cleanser that leaves your skin feeling soft and comfortable.
Our
Rose + Calendula Cream Cleanser
was created for exactly this kind of cleansing — gentle, creamy and especially lovely when skin is feeling dry or sensitive.
And if you're wearing makeup or heavier SPF, try double cleansing at night: start with an oil or balm cleanser to melt everything away, followed by your gentle cream cleanser.
Fall skin rule: Clean doesn't need to mean squeaky.
Step 2: Don't Skip Your Toner
This is one of the most underrated steps when the weather gets cooler.
Forget the harsh, alcohol-heavy toners many of us grew up with. A good toner can be a beautiful way to bring hydration back to freshly cleansed skin and prepare it for the rest of your routine.
At Lunah, we're big believers in applying your skincare while your skin is still slightly damp.
Mist your toner generously, then move into your serum.
You can even keep your toner nearby and mist throughout the day whenever your skin needs a little refresh. Think of it less as an optional step and more as your first layer of hydration.
Step 3: Add Water Before You Add More Oil
Here's where a lot of dry fall skin routines go wrong.
When skin feels dry, our instinct is often to reach immediately for oils and rich creams.
But dehydrated skin needs water and humectants first.
That's where Aloe Schroom comes in.
This lightweight hydration serum was created to help replenish thirsty-feeling skin without weighing it down. Apply it after toner while your skin is still slightly damp, then follow with your moisturizer or facial oil.
Think:
Mist → Hydrate → Seal.
It's one of the simplest changes you can make to your fall routine.
Step 4: Exfoliate — But Don't Attack Your Skin
When flakes and dullness appear, it's tempting to scrub harder.
Please don't.
Over-exfoliating already-dehydrated skin can leave your barrier feeling even more vulnerable.
Instead, fall is a great time to transition toward gentle, intentional exfoliation rather than constantly trying to polish your skin into submission.
Our Sandalwood Brightening Powder lets you control your exfoliation. Use a small amount and let your skin tell you how often it needs it.
For many people, once a week is plenty.
Your goal isn't to make your skin feel stripped and shiny.
It's to gently remove buildup so the healthy-looking skin underneath can shine through.
Step 5: Bring Back the Mask
Summer skincare tends to be all about keeping things light.
Fall is when we bring back the cozy rituals.
Once or twice a week, give your skin a little extra hydration with a mask like our Strawberry Hydrating Mask.
This is also one of my favourite ways to turn skincare into an actual ritual instead of another thing on your to-do list.
Cleanse. Exfoliate gently if needed. Apply your mask. Make a tea. Put your phone down for a few minutes.
Your skin — and probably your nervous system — will appreciate it.
Step 6: Seal Everything In
Once you've added hydration, you want to help keep it there.
This is when you may want to transition from the lightweight moisturizer you loved all summer into something a little more supportive.
Our Smooth + Restore Peptide Cream gives skin that extra layer of moisture, while Liquid Gold can be layered over your moisturizer when your skin is craving even more nourishment.
You don't necessarily need both every night.
Listen to your skin.
On comfortable nights, moisturizer may be enough. On cold, windy or especially dry days, adding a few drops of facial oil as your final step can make a noticeable difference in how your skin feels by morning.
Why Does Skin Seem to Get Drier After 35?
If you've noticed that your skin doesn't bounce back from seasonal changes quite as easily as it used to, there's a reason.
As we age, skin naturally changes. Oil production can decrease, the skin can become more prone to moisture loss, and changes in collagen and elasticity can make dehydration lines and texture more noticeable.
This doesn't mean you suddenly need a complicated 12-step anti-aging routine.
In fact, sometimes doing less — but doing it consistently — is exactly what mature skin needs.
✓ Gentle cleansing.
✓ Consistent hydration.
✓ Barrier support.
✓ Thoughtful exfoliation.
✓ Daily SPF.
✓ And ingredients your skin actually tolerates.
That's the foundation.
Your Simple 5-Minute Fall Skincare Routine
MORNING
Gentle cleanse if needed → Toner → Aloe Schroom → Moisturizer → SPF
EVENING
Oil/Balm Cleanse → Cream Cleanser → Toner → Aloe Schroom → Smooth + Restore Peptide Cream → Liquid Gold as needed
ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK
Gentle exfoliation with Sandalwood Brightening Powder + Strawberry Hydrating Mask
That's it.
You don't need to completely overhaul your skincare every time the seasons change.
Sometimes your skin is simply asking for less stripping, more hydration and a little more protection.
And fall is the perfect time to start listening.
