Step 1: Cleanse and Refresh (1 minute)
Start your day, or end it, with a gentle cleanser. I tend to wash religiously at night, but skip the cleansing in the morning. That works great for my skin (normal to dry). Our soap bar is VERY quick to cleanse with and would be perfect in the morning if you need to cleanse then. Massage it onto damp skin for 30 seconds, then rinse off. When you have the time, choose our triple threat to oil cleanse at night. Its detoxing and effectively removes dirt and impurities while providing a burst of hydration.

Step 2: Hydrate and Make Happy (1 minute)

]]>Okay! An appreciation post to one of my favourite tools. The derma roller! If you are looking to make some major shifts in your skin, at home, with a simple tool- this is fantastic. I've heard from many of you that have said in over just a week, you have seen brighter, tighter glowing skin.
Derma rollers, also known as microneedling devices, are a popular tool used in skincare for several reasons. They can offer certain benefits in specific situations. Here are some reasons why derma rollers are commonly used:
Collagen induction: Derma rollers create tiny micro-injuries on the skin's surface when rolled over it. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin's natural healing process, triggering the production of collagen and elastin fibers. Collagen is a protein that helps maintain the skin's firmness and elasticity, while elastin allows the skin to stretch and bounce back. By promoting collagen production, derma rollers can help improve the skin's texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance overall skin firmness.

Additionally, derma rollers may not be suitable for individuals with certain skin conditions, such as active acne, eczema, or rosacea.
I can use this tool each day (night time) and my skin loves it. But, yours may vary! See how it feels after the first use. At least three times a week to see a difference. Apply your restorative oils, vitamin C, or hyaluronic serums right after while the micro channels are very open and receptive.

]]>Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi, is not your typical sweet basil that most of us are familiar with. This herb is well known in Indian medicine to treat an array of physical ailments. Holy Basil is said to contain antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. Studies have shown that Holy Basil can help lower stress, blood pressure and sugar, aid in improving pain and inflammation in the joints, heal wounds in the mouth and on the body, aid the lungs and respiratory system and more.
Not only has Holy Basil been used to help internal ailments, but it has also been used to aid in skin and hair conditions. Holy Basil may help fight and prevent acne, support healthy skin and aging, reduce pigmentation, soothe skin conditions like eczema, prevent hair loss or thinning, and prevent dandruff.
Holy Basil can be used in a variety ways and also taken in a few ways. Some people like to use the oils from the plant especially for topical use. Others tend to drink the tea which is a great way to add this special herb to your everyday ritual. Most health food stores carry the tea, and you can find the plants themselves at smaller farms.
Here are a few ways to make the tea:
You can prepare the tea either from fresh or dry leaves. In order to make tea from dry leaves, take 2–3 teaspoons of holy basil in a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 5–6 minutes. Viola!
Take 5-6 sprigs of Holy Basil and let sit out on a dry rack or towel for one day. You will notice that it will start to wilt. Heat a quart of water to 190F/88C. Place the wilted sprigs into a canning jar or a big enough glass that you are able to cover with a plate or lid in order to catch all the oils that will be released. Pour your hot water over your sprigs then cover for 15 minutes. You can strain or leave the sprigs. Drink hot or cold!

Everyone needs a morning skincare routine in order to stay consistent with skin care and create happy skin. Once your routine, morning or night, becomes a consistent habit and something you can’t live without that is when it becomes a ritual.
Skincare routines will look different for each individual. By different, we mean the products, the amount of products, and skin tools used will be specific to each person, but a good skincare routine will always do a few things: create feelings of happiness and relaxation, create happy and glowing skin, and be something you can always fit in. Although the actual routine can be individualized, there is a specific outline everyone can follow to find their perfect skincare routine.
This routine is what works for my skin in the warmer months, adjust to your liking. You may need to add or take away depending on your skin condition.
We often talk about skincare, but hair care is just as important. We all want nice, healthy, manageable hair. Warmer months often bring more humidity, causing everyone to think that their hair needs less moisture. This is not always the case due to most of the spring and summer activities like the beach, pool, and sun. If you live in a climate that has more then one season, you know what I mean.
Salt, chlorine, and heat can cause your hair to dry out more quickly. Is it possible to get safe and effective sun exposure? Most of us typically run from the sun, while others tend to push the limits. Sun exposure in short periods is the safest and most effective way to get your daily dose of vitamin D. I am not throwing out the fact that sunscreen is important when being exposed to the sun. Hats and protective clothing are also helpful, especially when you might be exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. But the sun should NOT be feared! You can get safe and effective exposure by following these guidelines:
Is it necessary to use and wear sunscreen everyday? In short, the answer is YES! The rest of this post I am going to take the time to share with you why, how much to apply, and when to apply. Let’s also dive into the importance of vitamin D and my recommendations for some really good natural sunscreens. Let’s do this!
Vitamin D is so important for our bodies. It supports strong bones, strengthens the immune system, and may even help to prevent different kinds of cancer. You are probably aware that excessive and unprotected sun exposure can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and increase the risk of skin cancer, causing a lot of fear, but we shouldn’t fear the sun. By practicing safe sun exposure by using sunscreen on a daily basis, we can safely and efficiently protect our skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun.
When it comes to sunscreen there is a lot of confusion, most of the sunscreens on the market are “chemical based.” I don’t know about you, but if you have taken steps to live a more natural lifestyle with skincare, no one wants to compromise when it comes to sunscreen. We don’t have to. There are more natural sunscreens that use minerals from the earth to provide sun protection. The minerals that are most commonly used are Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. Keep in mind that these minerals are quite processed in order to be made into a sunscreen, but they are a much better option than chemical based sunscreens.
Natural sunscreen is effective, but only when used appropriately. The problem with most sunscreens, whether natural or synthetic, is that people don't use them enough. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral filters that are thick and white in consistency and application. Because of this uniformity, as well as the white cast of mineral sunscreens, consumers tend to apply less rather than more, leaving them more exposed to sunburn and long-term UV damage. Remember that the more sunscreen you apply to your skin, the greater sun protection you'll have. In terms of how much you’ll need to apply: the face should receive about half a teaspoon, while a shot glass should cover the whole body.
As a general rule of thumb, sunscreen should be the last product you apply. It's also important to ensure you allow the rest of your products to properly absorb before adding sunscreen on top. Wait a few minutes after you've applied your last skincare product. Don't forget to reapply if you are out in the sun for a while. A hat does well too! I always wear one.

When trying to aid skin dealing with skin conditions, nourishing your skin from the inside should take top priority. It is important what you use on the outside, but if you are still eating a diet high in inflammatory foods, most issues will continue to persist. Here are few suggestions for each of the most common skin conditions:
Acne can be caused by a couple of things: excessive dry skin that creates excess sebum that clogs pores or a result of hormonal imbalances. When dealing with acne, it can be beneficial to better your diet by adding whole foods such as green leafy veggies, omega-3s like fish, chia, or flax seeds, and a diet that is full of a rainbow of colors. Find foods that help support your hormones like quality proteins, healthy fats, fiber, and more. Sometimes it is necessary to supplement, but talk with your doctor first and make sure that it is something you are comfortable supplementing with. Ways to help your skin on the outside is by making sure you are moisturizing with quality products like Triple Threat or Liquid Gold. Use a gentle cleanser like a Facial Soap Bar and a Balancing Toner.
Eat gut-healthy foods to nourish your skin from within. Your skin will benefit from more whole meals, whole grains, fresh cruciferous veggies, cooling foods like cucumbers and melons, and fresh juices like pomegranate juice. Omega-3s from salmon or mackerel are good sources of healthy fats. Chia and flax seeds are other sources of omega-3s. Calendula, aloe, and rose oil, as well as natural, soothing essential oils, are all excellent selections when looking for the best goods. Water is required for a variety of processes in the body, including brain function, skin lubrication, the transport of nutrients from one part of the body to another, and the elimination of waste and other noxious substances. Nettle Tea is high in minerals and vitamins. This indigenous herb is a must-try; I like to make a pot and sip on it all day until bedtime. Foods to avoid would be dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, alcohol, and sugar. All these can wreak havoc on your gut health. Something that can be beneficial to your skin on the outside is moisturizing! Products that sink deep within the skin, like our Whipped Body Butter and Better Butter, can be helpful if applied right out of the shower.
Always remember your skin is what you eat! Great skincare always starts from within.
Normal skin is the easiest to take care of. Although it is not necessary to use drastic measures in your skin care, this skin type needs a skincare routine. Normal skin can use almost any cleanser: gel, milk, or oil. Since this skin type is neither too dry or too oily, it is probably best to use nothing too harsh. A balancing toner is great making sure your skin stays at the correct pH level, aiding your already happy skin. With normal skin, there is no need to over moisturize. Something light and moisturizing like Triple Threat is perfect for all skin types and it contains healing properties, plus adding a Hyaluronic Serum is a perfect way to add natural moisture. For those times when the skin is needing a little extra help, a gentle exfoliator is a great way to brighten the skin and rid the skin of dead cells.
Dry skin requires a bit more love than normal skin. With all skin types, less is always more, but it is especially true with dry skin. Dry skin benefits from cleansers that are gentle, like our Triple Threat Serum which doubles as a cleanser and moisturizer. Speaking of moisturizers, dry skin will benefit from not only a repairing serum but also a hydrating cream. It can also be important to add a HA serum that will neither make your skin oily or congested. (Do you know the benefits of HA serum and the difference between HA serum and other oil serum?) Be careful with exfoliating when it comes to dry skin, once a week with a gentle exfoliator will be plenty of care.
Since sebum is being overproduced in oily skin, it can be helpful to cleanse the skin often. It is not necessary to use a gentle cleanser, but it is also not helpful to use a cleanser that will completely strip your skin of all its oils. It is better to opt for something more on the gentle side rather than harsh. Moisturizing is important for oily skin. Most people think they should skip this step, but moisturizing oily skin with something light and natural found in the skin like HA is an amazing way to add hydration that doesn’t clog pores and leaves the skin feeling moisturized without an oily feel. If you are dealing with a lot of congestion, a detox mask can help decongest the skin and leave it feeling more balanced.
Combination skin is a combo of dry and oily skin. A great way to treat this skin is to be gentle with it. Using both recommendations for oily and dry skin will help create happy skin. When it comes to exfoliating, maybe use two different masks if you are not only doing spot treatments in order to keep from creating more dryness on the parts of the skin that is already dry.
With sensitive skin, you can usually follow care tips for dry skin with the added help of using unscented products. Scents can often cause unwanted reactions in sensitive skin. Keep it simple!

Rosacea is caused by an increase in blood flow to the skin's surface, which can cause blood vessels to widen. It causes the cheeks, nose, and chin to turn bright red, similar to a sunburn or flushing. Depending on weather changes, rosacea can increase in intensity. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition. It can be worsened by high blood pressure and an increase in temperature either through outside stimulants or internal stimulants like food or drink.
Eczema is another common skin condition that is characterized by dry, red, thickened, cracked, scaly skin that is itchy. It will present as red brownish patches on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, eyelids, bend of knees and elbows, etc. It is often seen in babies and kids, but eczema can also develop in the later years for adults. Eczema is often linked to allergies.
It can be difficult to differentiate psoriasis from eczema, but they are two different skin conditions. Psoriasis can be characterized by red skin that has a silvery and scaly look that is thick. It also may feel like the affected area is burning. Although it is often found in bending areas, it can almost be found anywhere on the body, such as the neck, chest, head, nails, etc. Babies, kids, and adults can all develop psoriasis. It is often described as an immune disorder.

Normal skin is the most boring of the five! It is skin that is neither too oily or too dry and usually has no blemishes. Normal skin is also not sensitive to certain products or allergens.
Dry skin is usually characterized by dull, flaky or rough looking skin. Pores can also be invisible in dry skin. Dry skin has lost its moisture barrier causing the skin to constantly lose water. This skin type can exhibit cracking, scaling, and even itchiness. Leading to reactive skin in the future. You will notice oiliness late in the afternoon to evening, or not at all. If you do it’s likely to happen between the eyebrows, tip of nose, and chin.
Oily skin is characterized by skin with overproduction of sebum, and pores are often more visible. Oily skin can also have a shiny look to it. If you truly have oily skin, you will notice oil within the first hour after cleansing- from ear to ear, forehead to chin.
Combination skin is skin that exhibits both dry and oily characteristics. In this skin type, the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) will usually be more oily and the cheeks will be more dry. If you truly have combo skin, you will notice oiliness within a handful of hours after cleansing- around your t-zone area.
Sensitive skin is usually skin that is easily made unhappy often by skincare products. This skin type can easily experience rashes, burning, drying, redness, and itchiness. Common triggers are fragrance, alcohol in products, exfoliants, certain detergents, some preservatives and botanical extracts.
Now that you know the different skin types, what is your skin type? A great way to understand your skin type is to wash your face and wait for 1 hour before placing any more products on your face. Depending on skin needs, it is probably time to lighten up on heavy creams/moisturizers. In the winter, it is paramount to create a barrier to keep the skin from drying out. Exfoliation is the topic of the day, and it is a big one! The issue with exfoliation is not knowing what is best for your current skin and the amount of times you should exfoliate in a week. Exfoliating too much can cause a ripple effect of skin issues. Along with too much exfoliation, the type of exfoliation method is really important too. Let’s dive in!
Exfoliation is the process of using either a chemical or physical method to remove the oldest dead skins which allows skin/body care products to sink deeper into the skin and gives the skin a brighter and more even complexion. Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals like AHAs such as glycolic acid, malic acid, citric acid that are made from fruits which peels the surface layer of skin. Physical methods use either some type of scrub, powders, or a tool to exfoliate. Exfoliation scrubs usually contain products such as sugar, coffee, or microbeads that when rubbed into the skins removes the surface layer of skin. Exfoliating powders are made from finely grounding rice, oats, coffee, clay, ect. to make a paste. Tools such as dry/wet brushes, organic facial cloths, or scalpel blades are used to exfoliate too.
Exfoliating for your current skin type is not as hard as you might think. (If you noticed, I said current skin type. Our skin is ever changing. It goes through stages. And that is okay!)
Sensitive and dry skin should exfoliate the least amount of times per week, starting with 1 time per week and increasing to a max of 2 times per week if your skin handles it well. For dry and sensitive skin, it is recommended to use a gentle exfoliant such as moisturizing chemical exfoliant, exfoliating powder, and dry/wet brushing can be beneficial. Our Sandalwood Brightening Powder is an example of a perfect powder that is gentle and exfoliating that is great for all skin types.
Oily, acne-prone, and combination skin can exfoliate 2 to 3 times per week with a chemical or physical method if the skin seems to handle it well. Oily skin can tend to take more exfoliation, but less is always more. Since exfoliation can tend to be drying to the skin, you should be cautious with how your skin is feeling in order to avoid drying out your skin. Using different hydrating liquids such as honey, herbal tea, water, etc. like this beauty tea to dry exfoliants like coffee grounds and sugar can be helpful in balancing out any drying that exfoliating can cause.
Mature skin should also be gentle with exfoliating. Using a gentle chemical exfoliant 2 times a week, less if needed, can be helpful for this skin type. Finding an exfoliant with AHAs would be great in not only exfoliating, but it also offers anti-aging benefits.
Exfoliation is like any other skincare. It isn't one size fits all! Your skin can change from month to month even from week to week so it is important to pay attention to how your skin is feeling and adjust accordingly.
A toner is made with distilled water infused with essential oils and possibly other herbs. A hydrosol is actually the byproduct of making essential oils. When fresh flowers, leaves, fruits, etc. are distilled they release oils which are considered essential oils. You are then left with the water soluble part of the plant which is what we call hydrosol. Although these two are very similar, they are made different and can have different uses.
Hydrosols are much less concentrated in nature due to the fact that they are the byproduct of essential oils. They are also softer and subtler in scent. This makes them perfect for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin. A few ways hydrosols can be used to help products absorb better into the skin, to set or remove your makeup, to enhance your powder face masks, to keep your face moisturized during the day, or to moisturize your scalp or hair.
Different hydrosols aid the skin with different problems. For example, one the most well-known hydrosols is rose because it is great for all skin types. Chamomile and Peppermint hydrosols aid in the fight against acne. Witch hazel helps to shrink pores and to balance the moisture in the skin and scalp. And there are so many more combinations!

Like most skin issues, the eyes are affected by our internal state. Things you are eating or drinking, the amount of water you intake everyday, and the amount of sleep you get directly affect the health of your eyes.
The health of your kidneys also play a big role in the health of the eyes. The kidneys’ job is to filter blood (goes back to the body), remove waste (which becomes urine), control the body’s fluid balance, and keep the right amount of electrolytes. Amazing, right?! After learning the job of the kidneys, one can see the importance of keeping your kidneys in optimal health. Here are a few things that harm optimal kidney function:
+ Interrupted sleep
+ Excess protein consumption (especially animal protein)
+ Being an avid traveler (especially engaging in habitual dehydrating air
travel)
+ Over-exercising
+ Excess water-consumption
+ Deficient water-consumption
+ Inconsistent eating habits
+ Taking too many supplements in pill form
+ Low body temperature and exposure to cold

Some ways you can help keep your kidneys functioning at optimal health is to maintain hydration, be careful of caffeine and sodium intake, take only supplements that are beneficial to you, deep sleep in a dark room, use no electronics or stimulants after 2pm if possible, and avoid animal protein because too much dense protein will overwork our kidneys. A vegetarian diet is much more beneficial for those of us with kidney issues. Eating as many hydrating fruits and veggies like dandelion, ginger, asparagus, blueberries, cranberries, string beans, cilantro, parsley, nettle tea, cabbage, greens, beets, lemon (juice), turmeric, etc, will help to cleanse both the kidneys and blood.
Along with the kidneys in optimal health, making sure you are hydrating properly, and sufficient quality sleep, chlorophyll can be beneficial because it is a rich detoxifier which assists the liver, blood, and colon in getting things cleaned up. Another lifestyle change that can be implemented is the use of gua sha/facial rollers or facial cupping. Gua Sha/facial rollers can be helpful because they reduce stress, improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness, and enhance your overall skin tone. Facial cupping can benefit the skin by lifting stagnancy from the skin, creating life and energy where skin is dull and lifeless, encouraging mega circulation, decreasing soft lines and wrinkles, and more.
After cleansing and using your toner, you will layer lightest to heaviest. If you are using Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and we highly recommend that you do, this will go first. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which is a substance that is used to help reduce the loss of moisture, making it a beneficial foundation to your skincare ritual. If you don’t have any issues with acne, you can skip this step. The time for spot treatment is now. Using a spot treatment can help lessen the time of an active breakout and also help with calming and protecting the area. It is important to remember that spot treatments should only be used on the affected area and not on the entire face. Most spot treatments are concentrated so be careful with application in order to not cause unnecessary drying of the face.
This is where things can get confusing for some. Light oils + serums are next. Serums + oils tend to sink deeper into the skin as opposed to creams. It is important that they go on before your creams in order for them to get the best penetration. Serums like our Triple Threat Serum can help soothe and moisturize your skin. Our Moon Light Magic Oil is great for restoring skin.
Now is the time to apply your heavier creams/moisturizers. Applying creams after your serums + oils will create a barrier for your skin. Creams do not have the same penetration as oils + serums, but they create a barrier to the elements that oils + serums are not able to. One of our favorite creams is the Hydrating Whipped Face + Body Cream because it is perfect for hydrating skin, fighting breakouts, and keeping wrinkles at bay. If you are in need of a more intense cream, try our Better Butter which helps when you are dealing with extremely dry skin issues like eczema.
Last but not least, this is when you can use eye cream or vitamin E oil. If using vitamin E oil, you only want to apply it at night because it has a thick consistency. Vitamin E oil is great for scarring, under the eyes, sunburns, psoriasis, etc.
I know that seems like alot but you can see how all the products perform different tasks but how they are all needed to support your skin. Layering your skin care is important to maximize the effectiveness of your products.
Two other important tips to mention is that you want to make sure your face isn’t dry when you apply these products. Your face doesn’t have to be dripping wet, but you will need to spritz toner, hydrosal, or use our travel mister in between the layers of products making sure to keep the skin damp. You also need to make sure that you are taking time to massage these products in and press everything into your skin at each step.

]]>As children, we often heard how important it was to eat our greens so we could be strong and healthy. But what they didn’t tell us was that eating green leafy vegetables would help our skin become happier and healthier.
Most leafy green vegetables contain Vitamin E, Folate, and Beta-carotene. These nutrients aid in helping the skin fight free radicals, renew and repair skin, and help produce and maintain new cells. Greens also contain Vitamin A which can help flush out toxins and fight against breakouts by helping control sebum production. Greens also help reduce inflammation and alkalize the body for less breakouts and happier skin.
It can be difficult getting in enough green veggies even as adults. Adding green veggies to each meal can be helpful in trying to increase your daily intake. Another way to add more green veggies to your diet is by adding them to your smoothies.
Here is the ultimate smoothie for healthy skin. Drink daily if your lifestyle allows:
non dairy milk to preferred consistency sugar free (read label)
1 c. fresh spinach
1/2 avocado
handful frozen strawberries or bluebrries
1 Tbsp. chia seeds
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
liquid stevia to taste (taste first. Add accordingly.)
